Handling Unhappy Holidays

The Holiday season evokes different emotions from one person to another. It can be a source of joy for some and a trigger for anxiety for others. It's hard to imagine that bright Christmas lights and garlands would cause stress, but for some people, the end-of-year festivities can be overwhelming.

However, it’s possible to restore calm and serenity in our homes and minds by prioritizing our mental health as well as that of our loved ones. Here are some tips that could lighten your emotional load during this season.

Do less, enjoy more!

This year, it's totally okay to invite fewer people, to opt for more discreet decoration, or to delegate certain tasks. The key is to recognize your priorities and honor your health, your time, and your resources. Knowing your limits and setting realistic expectations for yourself this holiday season will allow you to truly enjoy the holiday season without overdoing it.

Create New Traditions

Come up with new holiday traditions that you can enjoy, such as sending Christmas cards, making cookies, or crafting activities with family and friends via teleconference. With the ability to connect with your loved ones around the world, you can’t really miss out if you can’t travel this Christmas.

Take time for yourself

This year, be honest about how you truly feel on holidays. If you need a break during this time, express it to your loved ones without guilt. Prioritize activities that will help you relax: plan a getaway in nature, or a relaxation session at a spa. Bring a family member if you think they might also need it.
